Leveling up on Kindness

By Camille Dickerson-Lemieux, Managing Director

Throughout my life, I've encountered numerous moments that have profoundly shaped me, revealing the potential for kindness beyond my wildest imagination. Prior to these moments, such a degree of kindness was beyond conception—it simply didn't register in my awareness. However, once I experienced it firsthand, there was no returning to the way the world used to be.

One memory took place during my college years when I studied abroad in India. Mere days after meeting, a newfound friend pulled me out of harm's way of the chaotic rickshaw traffic. I was taken aback by the fact that someone I hardly knew would take it upon themselves to ensure my safety. Back in America, another friend consistently conversed with me, always considering the inner child within me. She was bursting with kind things to say which at the time I couldn't understand. Years later, a rush of exhilaration surged through me when another stranger accurately intuited my emotions and needs. Though I barely knew them I truly felt seen.

Looking back, there's a tinge of sorrow that it took me so long to recognize the potential for such small yet significant acts of kindness. Nevertheless, I believe it's essential to acknowledge these transformative experiences. It's far too easy to overlook the abundance of kindness that envelops us. Many individuals in our world have never had the privilege of experiencing their hearts soften due to someone's compassionate actions and considerations. The mere possibility of being genuinely heard remains foreign to them.

This realization underscores the importance of cultivating the art of Compassionate Listening. For some, these practices might seem inconceivable. I can certainly empathize with my former self, whose mind would have been utterly blown by the existence of these practices, let alone the fact that they're commonplace for some. Many individuals, I'm certain, would share this astonishment.

This is why I'm fervently dedicated to this cause. As long as there are souls that can find solace in kindness and being truly heard, the concept of Compassionate Listening demands propagation. Kindness is a skill that can be acquired, and the extent of our ignorance about its potential remains unknown. Therefore, I am committed to treating every person I encounter with kindness, as a tribute to the friends who illuminated the path for me.

In essence, the journey of discovering the profound impact of kindness has been transformative. Each encounter with genuine kindness has not only expanded my own heart but has also ignited a passion within me to share this invaluable gift with others."
