Get to know our Journey to Alabama

Are you curious about embarking on a transformative journey to the U.S. Deep South? Can you imagine making friends with someone with whom you have fundamental ideological disagreements? Join us for a 30-minute Zoom call on October 20th to hear more about this remarkable opportunity to grow personally, develop a greater understanding of your implicit biases, and discover lessons that Alabamians are learning about the pathways to a more perfect Union. We’ll share what past participants have said about these encounters which have affected them so deeply.

Joel Berman and Yael Petretti, experienced facilitators who have led several of these journeys, will be on hand to provide an overview of our itinerary which will include visiting important sites in the struggle for human and civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham. We will devote

a day to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, both created by the Equal Justice Initiative. But this is not the usual “civil rights tour.” Of paramount importance to us as Compassionate Listeners will be our listening sessions with different folks who live in Alabama today. You will have the opportunity to meet and listen to people from across the ideological spectrum - those with whom you agree and others whose perspectives and life experiences will be quite different from yours. Our goal is to open our hearts to every speaker in order to recognize the shared values and common humanity that transcend our political divides and offer hope for our generation and those to follow.

We’ll be able to answer your questions about hotels, getting around, flights, food &  snacks, what to wear, and anything else you’d like to ask.
